Amid all the big announcements Apple made at yesterday’s Worldwide Developers Conference yesterday, one addition didn’t get much attention: You can now switch your default search engine to DuckDuckGo in the company’s native web browser, Safari.

The move should give the up-and-coming search engine a better chance of grabbing market share against Google and Bing. (I plan on switching over as soon as it becomes available.)

Currently, Apple will allow iOS users to pick between Google (the most popular), Microsoft’s Bing, or even Yahoo Search. Now, iOS users will have the chance to start using DuckDuckGo as their main search engine, which should provide a greater degree of privacy when searching the mobile web. DuckDuckGo’s search doesn’t use all of the data tracking tactics as Google, which means it won’t be serving you targeted advertising or trying to goad you into trying other apps or services from the company.

This has already proved to be a big year for the company, which rolled out a major redesign of its search engine on the web last month.

Founded in 2008, the Pennsylvania-based DuckDuckGo has previously raised a total of $3 million in funding from Union Square Ventures.
