Skype now supports native resolution for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Skype today updated its iPhone app with support for the larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus screen sizes. You can download the new version now directly from Apple’s App Store.

On the new iPhones, Skype 5.6 displays more of your recent chats and shows more messages in the conversation view. In short, this native resolution support means you can now properly use the extra screen real estate on your new iOS 8 device.

This is the second Skype release that builds on what iOS 8 has to offer (the first one added the ability to manage calls and messages from your lock screen). Skype still supports the iPhone 4 and above, though we would wager that those days are numbered.

Here’s the full Skype 5.6 changelog:

  • Native resolution support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+.
  • Presence indicators are now displayed in the “recent” list.
  • Number of contacts and time zones are now shown on contact profiles.
  • Individual conversations can be marked as read/unread.
  • Notification sounds are disabled in “Do not disturb” mode.
  • General Improvements.

If you have something to suggest for the Skype for iOS apps, the Microsoft-owned company is taking feedback on the new iOS Ideas group. Currently the idea users have voted most popular is to add an option to delete shared photos, and it’s already marked as “under consideration.”

Just yesterday, the company launched Skype Qik, its first companion app to the main Skype app. It’s great to see that there are enough resources to go around so that all the Skype apps are getting new features and improvements essentially at the same time as a major launch of a new product.
